I don’t often go out for kebabs, but Berenjak would make you crawl over hot coals to get one.
There are two branches, one in Soho and one in Borough. It’s hard to book so most of the time you just have to come early (we came at 6) and pray that you’ll get a lick of their very famous black chickpea hummus. For me it has the texture of penut butter rather than normal hummus but it’s incredibly flavourful.
The set menu starts at £40pp and I would HIGHLY recommend upgrading to the chicken poussin and sharing (if your date lets you) with a classic Koobideh kebab.
The decor makes you feel like you’re in a 60s Persian house that has been transported into the modern world. Spotting the warm chandelier lighting from the cold streets of Borough was actually what drew me in (I’d been to the Soho branch but hadn’t realised they opened a new restaurant).
One thing about Persian food though is that it’s very mild. Very little acidity, salt and even heat – all of the things I love in a meal. So I’m giving it an 8/10, but the execution and service did not disappoint. Maybe next time I’ll ask if they have anything a bit spicier on the menu!
